The homeless Santas are not a cruel joke of mine. They are a reflection of just how much the world has changed since Thomas Nash first drew the jolly old elf.
In the past few years, millions have suffered unemployment and homelessness. These people are not the stereotypical druggies or alcoholics, just normal people that the economy has discarded. In my sculptures Santa stands in for them as Everyman. Santa is the embodiment of human kindness and generosity, and his fallen state represents the impoverishment of the human spirit.
But he has not completely fallen. Even in his need Santa does not turn to drugs or drink. He behaves with dignity, shows kindness to animals, and says grace over meals at the shelter. He is a reminder that even in bad times, goodness exists. Each time Santa finds a home, I donate to the local food pantry. After he gave so much, for so long, to so many, who could deny Santa a place in our hearts and homes? Not I.
