Alissa grew up in a small town near Cincinnati, OH. Her mother, a teacher, read Greek and Roman myths to her children as bedtime stories. With her engineer father, learning became play. This led to her first job at a natural history museum where she gave tours and science demonstrations. Following a love of history, she joined a group that reenacted Scottish and early American history, performing a play about the Jacobite rebellion in the US and Canada.
While studying art at Ohio State University, she started her own business at the age of 20, crafting gemstone jewelry and leather goods. After moving to Atlanta, she enrolled at Kennesaw State University. She volunteered for NERO, a theatrical group, and worked a series of odd jobs while pursuing her degree in art.
